What to See & Do
Take a taxi to Rajpath Bhavan and Rashtrapati Bhavan. These attractions are close to the New Delhi Indira Gandhi international Airport. Rajpath Bhavan, a war memorial built by Lutyens on 1921, is lined with lush green trees and fountains. It is a wonderful place to visit at night when the buildings are illuminated.
Another attraction near the airport is Qutb Minar. It was built in the 12th century and is an enormous tower that commemorates the Muslim conquest at Delhi. When it was constructed, it was the highest "skyscraper” in the world. The towering pillar, made of fluted red and sandstone and decorated in calligraphy with verses from Koran, is a sight to behold.
If you are interested in modern Indian art, the National Gallery of Modern Art should be visited. You can see some of the oldest pieces dating back to 1857, as well as a collection that includes more than 14,000 works by Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bolse. Also, you will find famous foreign artists. For more masterpieces, visit the National Museum. This museum is a great place to learn about Indian culture, history, and more. Two sculptures that are worth a visit include the Harappan temple dancer from 4,600 years ago and the Gandhara-era standing Buddhist.
Humayun's Tomb, one of Delhi's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is worth a visit if you have the time. This Mughal-era structure was the precursor to the stunning Taj Mahal in Agra. Humayun’s Tomb, which combines dome, mausoleum, and plinth, is an outstanding example of Mughal architectural design. You can spend the whole day wandering through square Persian-inspired gardens, and following paths and waterways that cross them. Visit this remarkable monument to learn more about the history of Mughal Empire.
How to Get Around
You can take different transport options from the airport to get to the various attractions of the city. You can take the Delhi Metro, which connects Terminal 3 to the city's heart. The metro will take visitors to the city center in 20 minutes. The Delhi Transport Corporation also runs 24-hour express buses between the airport arrival areas and central Delhi. You can also get a taxi, which is cheap and available outside of the arrivals areas.
Visitors can travel around the city center by taking taxis or rickshaws. Avoid the bus stations in the city centre as they can be very crowded.
